Description: These Greek icons are in the style developed in the Eastern Roman Empire, the capital of which was Byzantium (Constantinople, later Istanbul) by the early Christian Church. The Icon was and is regarded as a window onto the Divine and is used as an aid to worship. This subject of Madonna and Child conveys Loving Kindness and the power of a mother's love.
Comments: This icon is mass produced in Greece by a screen printing process requiring up to 50 separate screens onto canvas after which the picture is mounted with glue onto a wood block. The paints used are apparently produced in the traditional manner of tempera with egg as a binder. The background is gold leaf.
